The Bank of Spain is the national central bank of Spain. Established in Madrid in 1782 by Carlos III, today the bank is a member of the European System of Central Banks. Since January 1st, 1999 the Banco de España has been performing basic functions attributed to the ESCB, as well as functions as a central bank, such as The holding and management of currency and precious metal reserves not transferred to the European Central Bank, etc.
